Local Attractions

Start your Suffolk wanderings with a potter around the historic market town of Woodbridge (15 minutes’ drive), where you can stroll along the River Deben and tour the Tide Mill (one of two left working in the country). For further immersion in English culture, visit the burial site at National Trust - Sutton Hoo (10 minutes) to see the Anglo-Saxon treasure trove and ship excavated in the 1990s. Continuing with the heritage theme, Orford Castle (25 minutes) is a monumental 12th-century edifice built by King Henry II; it is open for exploration of the keep, chapel and towers. Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) might also be on your sightseeing schedule for its rampart walks and 19th-century workhouse museum. If the kids get restless, ditch the history lessons and head for the shingle Aldeburgh beach (half an hour), or have a stroll around the salt marshes and heathland of Deben Peninsula National Landscape (15 minutes). You can also go kayaking and paddleboarding on the Deben (10 minutes), meet rare horses at The Suffolk Punch Trust (20 minutes) and have a day communing with sheep, goats and alpacas at Easton Farm Park (15 minutes).
